Flooring Installation

Installing new flooring completely transforms the look of your house. It’s exciting to freshen your space or add a modern touch; it almost feels like you’re getting a new home at a fraction of the cost!

A skilled team of flooring professionals can help make your home makeover dreams a reality, but there are a few things you can do ahead of time to help them do their job well right out of the gate. Whether it’s hardwood floors, laminate floors, tile floors, or carpeting, here are five steps you should take beforehand to ensure professional results for your flooring installation.

  • Discuss Who Will Remove the Big Stuff

Before your team of pros can do their job, you have to move some things out of their way first. Furniture, appliances, and other large pieces in a room will slow progress if they’re still sitting on the floor on your installation date!

As you work out the installation estimate, discuss who will be responsible for moving the furniture out of the room. If it’s an all-inclusive project quote, the chances are that they will be moving things for you since the price includes service charges for that extra task. Just make doubly sure that you clarify whose responsibility that is.

  • Remove Baseboards

Before your installation date, remove the baseboards in the room that’s getting new flooring. This will allow your professionals plenty of room to get the flooring boards as close to the wall as possible and will give it a clean, polished look when it’s all said and done.

Depending on your baseboards’ size and style, you could also remove the shoe molding that covers the seam between the room’s flooring and baseboards. It’s a little quicker, but it still gives your team of pros plenty of space to work with.

  • Pull Out the Door Trim

Stop moldings in a doorway are more challenging to remove than baseboards, but it improves the look of your new flooring by a landslide! Many flooring pros will just cut the bottoms of the stop molding to slide the flooring boards underneath, but why not give them a helping hand? When they’re finished laying the new flooring, you can trim down the old moldings to fit again, or get brand new ones to match your new floors!

  • Ensure Your New Floors Are Low Enough for Your Doors

Many flooring options like laminate or vinyl are easily installed by floating, which means it can be glued down on top of practically any other floor covering. While this is convenient for new flooring installation, it may pose a problem for any doors leading into the room! Make sure the added height won’t keep your doors from swinging smoothly.

  • Prep the Subfloor

The subfloor should be another talking point when you’re discussing estimates with your hired professionals. Most will not touch the subfloors unless it’s specifically outlined in the project contract.

If the subfloor is not part of the deal, make sure that you check it beforehand. Look for any flaws like sinking spots or dips, and consider fixing them before your installation date. A slid subfloor will make the install day smooth and help your flooring pros give you the best possible result.
